Sleep, Pain and the Immune Response

Sleep or disturbed sleep, pain and the immune response are interlinked. There is a relationship between sleep and pain and one begets the other. The effect on the human body can be damaging, for reasons that are not well understood by health professionals lack of sleep or disturbed sleep can cause the immune system to go into “overdrive”.

Exhaustion related stress may increase the levels of white blood cells as part of the immune system inflammatory response. Sleep periods are the longest period of rest during which the human body’s levels of inflammation are at their lowest.

Inflammation is a natural part of the human body’s healing process which forms part of the complex biological response to harmful stimuli such as; pathogens, irritants and damaged cells.

Under normal circumstances the inflammatory process is self-limiting; however continuous inflammation may lead to an inflammatory related disease developing or indeed possibly exacerbating an existing or underlying condition
