The lungs
are the organs of respiration, providing oxygen for life and health and
expelling waste carbon dioxide a by-product of the human body’s metabolism. The
lungs also warm the incoming air and clean it of any dust particles.
There are two lungs: the left one is divided into two lobes and the right one
is divided into three lobes. The lungs in total contain approximately 2400km (1500 miles) of airways and 300
to 500 million alveoli. The alveoli have a total surface area about the size of
one side of a grass tennis court.
If all of the capillaries that surround the alveoli were unwound and laid end
to end, they would extend for about 992km (620 miles).
Each
fully developed lung weighs about 1.1
kilograms (2.5 pounds), so the entire organ weighs about 2.3 kilograms
(5 pounds).
